How do I perform ghusl from janabah?

Short answer

What is obligatory is to cover the body with water with the intention of removing janabah; the more complete way is to begin with istinja', then wudu', then pour water over the head and body.

Evidence and explanation

The Shaykh explained the sufficient ghusl and the manner of the most complete ghusl, and that the aim is to cover the body with water.

Question

English translation (unreviewed): Some women find the ghusl for janabah and menstruation difficult. We ask your eminence to detail how ghusl is done, and whether a woman is purified from janabah if she pours three handfuls over her head, and whether she must wash all of her head with water.

From the text of the answer

English translation (unreviewed): The junub, the menstruating woman and the woman in post-natal bleeding all have close ghusl: she covers her body with water and pours water over her head. But the sunnah is to begin with wudu': first perform istinja' — the menstruating woman, the woman in post-natal bleeding and the junub perform istinja' first — then perform the wudu' of prayer, then pour water over the head three handfuls, then over the right side, then the left side, then complete. This is the sunnah, and there is no need to undo the hair; but for the menstruating woman it is recommended to undo it, because her period is long, and likewise the woman in post-natal bleeding. If she undoes it, it is better for the ghusl, so she washes it with water; and if she passes water over it without undoing it, that suffices.
