English translation (unreviewed): My problem is that I move a lot in the prayer, and I have heard that there is a hadith meaning that more than three movements in the prayer invalidate it. How authentic is this hadith? And what is the way to get rid of excessive fidgeting in prayer?
- From the text of the answer
English translation (unreviewed): The sunnah for the believer is to turn to his prayer and be humble in it with his heart and body, whether obligatory or voluntary, because of the saying of Allah, Glorified: “Certainly will the believers have succeeded: they who are during their prayer humbly submissive” [al-Mu'minun: 1-2]. And he must be at rest in it, which is among its most important pillars and obligations, because of the saying of the Prophet ﷺ to the one who prayed badly and was not at rest in his prayer: “Go back and pray, for you have not prayed”; he did so three times, and the man said: O Messenger of Allah, by the One who sent you with the truth, I cannot do better than this, so teach me. The Prophet ﷺ said to him: “When you stand for prayer, perform wudu' fully, then face the qiblah and say takbir, then recite what is easy for you of the Qur'an, then bow until you are at rest in the bowing, then rise until you stand upright, then prostrate until ...”
- Evidence as the shaykh cited it
English translation (unreviewed): This authentic hadith indicates that tuma'ninah (being at rest) is a pillar of the prayer and a great obligation in it, without which it is not valid; whoever pecks his prayer has no prayer. Humility (khushu') is the core of the prayer and its soul, so it is prescribed for the believer to pay attention to it and be keen on it. As for limiting the movements that contradict tranquility and humility to three movements, that is not a hadith from the Prophet ﷺ; it is the saying of some scholars and has no reliable evidence.
English translation (unreviewed): Among the evidences that little action and few movements in the prayer do not invalidate it, and likewise action and movements that are separate, not consecutive, is what is established from the Prophet ﷺ that he opened the door one day for 'A'ishah while he was praying; and it is established from him ﷺ in the hadith of Abu Qatadah: that he prayed one day with the people while carrying Umamah, daughter of his daughter Zaynab; when he prostrated he put her down and when he stood he carried her.

English translation (unreviewed): The time allows for this question, Shaykh 'Abd al-'Aziz, from our brother Isma'il Nasir al-Hayyaf from Ha'il, who asks and says: Some people say that whoever makes three movements in the prayer, his prayer is invalid. Is this correct?
- From the text of the answer
English translation (unreviewed): It is not correct. This is the saying of some scholars but it is not correct. What invalidates the prayer is only the excessive, consecutive movement by custom: if the movement is much and consecutive, this is what invalidates it according to the scholars, such as fidgeting with his clothes or hair a great deal consecutively, or taking something and putting it down consecutively and often. It has no fixed limit, but is considered much by custom; this is what invalidates the prayer.

English translation (unreviewed): Prayer is the head of the kinds of remembrance, but it is noticed that many worshippers make many movements during prayer. What is the limit of the movement that invalidates the prayer?
- From the text of the answer
English translation (unreviewed): The believer must be still in the prayer. The Messenger ﷺ said: “Be still in the prayer”, and Allah says: “Certainly will the believers have succeeded: they who are during their prayer humbly submissive” [al-Mu'minun: 1-2]. So the worshipper must be still in the prayer and humble in it and not make excessive movement that invalidates it and makes him as if he were not praying. A little is excused; but if the movements are many and consecutive, they invalidate the prayer according to all the scholars, so one must beware.
- Evidence as the shaykh cited it
English translation (unreviewed): As for few and separate movements, they are excused. The Prophet ﷺ prayed while carrying Umamah; when he prostrated he put her down and when he stood he carried her — peace be upon him — and he opened the door for 'A'ishah, and he stepped forward in the eclipse prayer, and stepped forward in the rows until he reached for a bunch [of grapes] when Paradise was shown to him, but it was not decreed that he take it; and when the Fire was shown to him he stepped back, so the rows stepped back.

English translation (unreviewed): Our brother asks and says: A man is praying and makes three consecutive movements; is his prayer invalidated, such as scratching the head or nose or the like?
- From the text of the answer
English translation (unreviewed): There is no evidence for this and the prayer is not invalidated by that, but the believer should strive for stillness in the prayer and humility, and avoid fidgeting and movement except out of need, taking care of fewness and not doing much. The scholars, may Allah have mercy on them, have mentioned that excessive consecutive movement in the prayer invalidates it without specifying a limit.
- Evidence as the shaykh cited it
English translation (unreviewed): It is established from him ﷺ that he prayed on the minbar, then came down and prostrated at the foot of the minbar, then climbed up and recited on the minbar and bowed on it. When he gave the salam he said: “I only did this so that you might follow me and learn my prayer.” And it is established from him ﷺ: “that he prayed while carrying Umamah, daughter of Zaynab, daughter of his daughter; when he prostrated he put her down, and when he stood he carried her” — peace be upon him. This movement did not invalidate the prayer, because it was separate.
English translation (unreviewed): And likewise it is established from him ﷺ in the eclipse prayer that when Paradise was shown to him he stepped forward and the rows stepped forward, and he wanted to take a bunch from it but that was not made easy and he was not enabled to do it; and when the Fire was shown to him, peace be upon him, he stepped back and the rows stepped back. That indicates that this movement and its like do not invalidate the prayer. Yes.

English translation (unreviewed): Many people fidget and move a lot in the prayer. Is there a particular limit of movement that invalidates the prayer? And does limiting it to three consecutive movements have a basis? And what do you advise one who fidgets a lot in the prayer?
- From the text of the answer
English translation (unreviewed): The believing man and woman must have tranquility in the prayer and avoid fidgeting, because tranquility is among the pillars of the prayer, as established in the two Sahihs from the Prophet ﷺ that he ordered the one who was not at rest in his prayer to repeat the prayer. What is prescribed for every Muslim man and woman is humility in the prayer, turning to it and bringing the heart to it before Allah, Glorified, because of the saying of Allah: “Certainly will the believers have succeeded: they who are during their prayer humbly submissive” [al-Mu'minun: 1-2]. Fidgeting with his clothes or beard or otherwise is disliked for him, and if it becomes much and consecutive it is forbidden and invalidates the prayer.

English translation (unreviewed): The Shaykh: If she did not deviate from the qiblah greatly, her prayer is not invalidated, but a person in his prayer should turn to his Lord and not look to anyone, and turn away from all worldly matters; for the Prophet, may Allah's blessings and peace be upon him and his family, prayed one day in a khamisah (patterned garment) and glanced at its markings; when he finished he said: “Take this khamisah of mine to Abu Jahm and bring me the anbijaniyyah of Abu Jahm, for it distracted me just now from my prayer.” In this there is an indication that the worshipper should not pray with something that distracts him, whether connected to him like a garment or separate from him.

English translation (unreviewed): May Allah reward you. How many movements invalidate the prayer?
- From the text of the answer
English translation (unreviewed): The Shaykh: There is no specific number. Rather the movement that is contrary to prayer, such that if this man were seen it would be said that he is not in prayer, is the one that invalidates. For this reason the scholars, may Allah have mercy on them, defined it by custom, saying: if movements are many and consecutive they invalidate the prayer without mention of a specific number. And some scholars' limiting it to three movements needs evidence, because everyone who limits something to a specific number or specific manner must bring evidence, otherwise he has become an arbitrary lawgiver in Allah's law.

English translation (unreviewed): In his segment, Shaykh, the number of movements that invalidate the prayer?
- From the text of the answer
English translation (unreviewed): The Shaykh: As for the movements that invalidate the prayer, they have no specific number; but the movements that are contrary to prayer, being many and consecutive, are the ones that are forbidden and invalidate the prayer if they occur from worshippers, unless they are due to necessity, such as fleeing from fire, or evil, or an enemy, or the like, which do not invalidate the prayer even if consecutive, because of the saying of the Most High: “And if you fear [an enemy], then on foot or riding” [al-Baqarah: 239].

English translation (unreviewed): May Allah bless you. This questioner, Ahmad 'Abd al-Rahim from Dammam, says: Does movement through forgetfulness invalidate the prayer, and does a slight deliberate movement invalidate the prayer? And how many movements invalidate the prayer? I ask the Shaykh Muhammad for an answer, may Allah reward you.
- From the text of the answer
English translation (unreviewed): The Shaykh: On the occasion of this question I would like to expand the answer. I say: movement in prayer is of five categories: obligatory, sunnah, permissible, forbidden and disliked. The obligatory movement is every movement on which the validity of the prayer depends: every movement on which the validity of the prayer depends is obligatory. An example: a man prays toward other than the qiblah by his own judgement, then a person more knowledgeable than him about the indications of the qiblah comes and says: the qiblah is on your right; here he must turn, and this is an obligatory movement, because if he did not, his prayer would be invalid. The evidence for this is what happened to the people of Quba', may Allah be pleased with them, when someone came to them while they were in the Fajr prayer and said to them: a Qur'anic revelation was sent down to the Prophet, may Allah's blessings and peace be upon him and his family, and he was ordered to face the Ka'bah; so they turned, and their faces had been ...
- How the shaykh reasons from it
English translation (unreviewed): They said: O Messenger of Allah, we saw you take off your sandals, so we took off our sandals. He said to them: “Jibril came to me and told me that there was filth on them, so I took them off.” That indicates that if a person knows that there is impurity on some of his clothes, he takes it off; but if the impurity is in the garment and he cannot take it off except by being exposed, then there is no alternative to cutting off the prayer: he cuts it off and takes a clean garment. So the obligatory movement in prayer is every movement on which the validity of the prayer depends; it is an obligatory movement.
Differences in views and wording (not merged)
- Ibn Baz said in 7224 that limiting invalidation to three movements is 'the view of some scholars' and is not correct, and made the invalidating movement the excessive, consecutive movement by custom; and in 2897, 4049 and 17971 he obliged stillness and tranquility. The two shaykhs' statements on the criterion of 'excess' have not been compared in detail.
