Question

English translation (unreviewed): After this, a letter reached the programme from Syria, Dar'a; the sender, a listener (A. N.), asks your eminence and says: My father is an old man who performs all the obligations, praise be to Allah, but sometimes during prayer he turns right and left, and may gesture with his hand to someone without realising the gravity of that and its effect on his prayer; and I always try. — The Shaykh: Repeat. — The presenter: He says: without realising the gravity ...

(excerpt from the question)

From the text of the answer

English translation (unreviewed): Turning in the prayer is disliked except for a need. If he turns his head sometimes, his prayer is valid, but he is to be told and shown that this is disliked and a deficiency in the prayer. It came in the hadith from the Prophet ﷺ that when he was asked about turning in the prayer, he said: “It is a snatching by which Satan snatches from the worshipper's prayer.” So it came in the hadith from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ about turning; he said: “It is a snatching by which Satan snatches from the worshipper's prayer.” But if need calls for it, there is no harm: the Prophet ﷺ turned in the prayer for a need, and al-Siddiq turned in the prayer for a need.

Evidence as the shaykh cited it

English translation (unreviewed): The point is that if the turning of the head is for a need, there is no harm, and likewise gesturing to someone for a need; no harm. The Prophet ﷺ gestured in the prayer; if he gestures to a person to enter, or leave, or close a door, there is no harm in that.

Question

English translation (unreviewed): A woman asks about the ruling on turning in the prayer in order to seek refuge from the devil (Khinzab)?

From the text of the answer

English translation (unreviewed): Turning in the prayer in order to seek refuge in Allah from the accursed Satan when whispering occurs is not objectionable; indeed it is recommended when there is strong need for it, with the head only, because the Prophet ﷺ ordered 'Uthman ibn Abi al-'As al-Thaqafi to do it when he complained to him of the whispers of Satan that he found; he ordered him to spit lightly to his left three times and seek refuge in Allah from Satan. He did that, and Allah cured him of it.

Evidence as the shaykh cited it

English translation (unreviewed): As for turning in the prayer without a reason, it is disliked, because of the saying of the Prophet ﷺ when he was asked about that: “It is a snatching by which Satan snatches from the worshipper's prayer” [1]. May Allah grant all success in what pleases Him; He is Hearing and Responsive [2].

Question

English translation (unreviewed): He has another and final question; he says: I see many brothers turning right and left in the prayer in a very strange manner, and some come and say takbir before standing in the prayer; that is, they say takbir and then walk several steps. What do you advise such brothers?

From the text of the answer

English translation (unreviewed): The Shaykh: We advise these brothers by saying: the Prophet, may Allah's blessings and peace be upon him, warned against turning in the prayer, saying: “Beware of turning in the prayer, for it is destruction.” And when he was asked about turning in the prayer he said: “It is a snatching by which Satan snatches from the worshipper's prayer” — that is, theft. Would anyone be pleased that his enemy should steal something from his best deed?

Evidence as the shaykh cited it

English translation (unreviewed): And we advise them to stand before Allah, the Most High, devoutly in their prayer, as Allah, Blessed and Exalted, commanded them in His saying: “Maintain with care the prayers and the middle prayer, and stand before Allah devoutly” [al-Baqarah: 238].

Question

English translation (unreviewed): Well done. These questions are directed to your eminence. He says: To his eminence Shaykh 'Abd al-'Aziz ibn 'Abdillah ibn Baz, General President of the Departments of Scholarly Research, Ifta', Da'wah and Guidance, the respected: I hope your eminence will answer me these questions in Nur 'ala al-Darb: What is the ruling on drinking a little water in a voluntary prayer? And we hope that it is supported with evidence.

From the text of the answer

English translation (unreviewed): As for drinking water in the obligatory prayer, it is prohibited, and likewise eating, for the prayer has an occupation that excludes eating, drinking and people's talk, and what is required is tranquility in it and turning to it; as for the voluntary prayer, some people permitted this ..

Question

English translation (unreviewed): A letter reached us from the listener 'Abdah Muhammad Muhsin Rajih from Yemen, Ta'izz, who asks some questions. He says in his first question: Is the prayer invalidated by committing some forbidden acts?

From the text of the answer

English translation (unreviewed): This requires detail: if committing some forbidden acts in the prayer, this invalidates it; for example, he speaks in the prayer, or laughs in the prayer, or insults someone in the prayer; this invalidates the prayer.
