The basis of obligation
Full ownership and reaching the nisab
Zakat is due on zakatable wealth when it is fully owned by its owner and reaches the nisab recognised by the Shari'ah, observing the conditions specific to each type of wealth.
The year
Not a condition for all wealth
A passing year is a condition in some kinds of wealth, while other wealth has other rulings, such as what comes out of the earth. So one general rule is not applied to all wealth.
Practical estimation
Do not guess in precise issues
When there are debts, trade, shared wealth, conversions between currencies or jewellery, these are issues that need precision and detail. Gather your wealth data then return to a trusted scholar or a recognised fatwa body.
