The chapter of zakat

The wealth on which zakat is due

A preliminary definition of the major types of zakatable wealth, noting that the detailed calculation differs with the wealth and the situation.

01

Cash and savings

The value of the wealth, reaching the nisab, and the passing of the year in cases where it is a condition are reviewed, with homogeneous wealth being combined in the calculation.

02

Trade goods

What is prepared for sale and trade is valued at the completion of the year according to Shari'ah rules, and not every asset the trader owns is treated alike.

03

Crops, fruits and livestock

These types have nisabs, conditions and particular amounts, so their rules are presented in separate lessons after scholarly review.

04

Contemporary wealth

Shares, funds, investment accounts and debts need knowing the nature of the wealth and the purpose of owning it; so one ruling is not given to all forms.

Review sources

This page is a brief teaching introduction, and does not make one ruling for all forms of contemporary wealth. Each type returns to its source and its conditions, and complex cases still need independent scholarly review.
