Bid'ah: its definition, criterion, division and what the scholars reported

Question

What is bid'ah? What is its criterion? Is it divided into good and bad? And what is the difference between doctrinal and practical bid'ah and sunnah?

Introduction

This draft gathers texts of Ibn Baz and Ibn al-'Uthaymin on defining bid'ah, its criterion and its division into categories, the difference between doctrinal and practical bid'ah, and between worldly matters and religion.

Two positions appear in the materials: the division of bid'ah into categories (as Ibn Baz reported from a group of scholars), and that every bid'ah is misguidance without division; the texts of each shaykh are shown in his own words without preference from the site.

The scholars’ statements as reported; no independent preference from the site

Question

English translation (unreviewed): From Bangladesh, the questioner 'Abd al-Jalil 'Ali sent this question: What is bid'ah, and does it have categories, your eminence?

From the text of the answer

English translation (unreviewed): Bid'ah is every act of devotion that contradicts the Shari'ah; everyone who draws near to Allah with something Allah has not legislated is said to have done a bid'ah, such as celebrating birthdays (mawalid), celebrating the night of al-Isra' and al-Mi'raj, and celebrating the first night of Rajab which they call al-Ragha'ib; all of these are innovations. Likewise what people have introduced of building over graves is a bid'ah, taking mosques over them is a bid'ah, building domes over them is a bid'ah and an evil, a cause of shirk and a means to it; all of it is misguidance, and there are no categories in it. The correct view is that all of it is misguidance. The Prophet ﷺ said: “Every bid'ah is misguidance.” This is correct: all bid'ahs are misguidance.

Question

English translation (unreviewed): When is an act described as a bid'ah in the pure Shari'ah? And is the term bid'ah applied only in matters of worship, or does it include both worship and transactions?

From the text of the answer

English translation (unreviewed): Bid'ah in the pure Shari'ah is every act of worship that people have introduced which has no basis in the Book or the Sunnah or in the practice of the four rightly-guided caliphs, because of the Prophet's ﷺ saying: “Whoever introduces into this matter of ours what is not part of it will have it rejected” (agreed upon as authentic), and his saying ﷺ: “Whoever does an act that is not in accordance with our matter will have it rejected” (reported by Muslim in his Sahih), and his saying ﷺ in the hadith of al-'Irbad ibn Sariyah: “You must follow my sunnah and the sunnah of the rightly-guided caliphs after me; hold on to it and bite onto it with your molar teeth, and beware of newly invented matters!”

Evidence as the shaykh cited it

English translation (unreviewed): “For every newly invented matter is a bid'ah, and every bid'ah is misguidance.” Reported by Imam Ahmad, Abu Dawud, al-Tirmidhi and Ibn Majah with a sound chain; and the hadiths with this meaning are many.

Question

English translation (unreviewed): What is the definition of bid'ah? And is what contradicts the Book and the Sunnah called a good bid'ah? Because Shaykh al-Islam says: what contradicts the Book is bid'ah, and what is not known to contradict it may not be called bid'ah; for we find some groups going to excess, for example, in particular adhkar in the morning or the evening, adding to these adhkar. Is this called bid'ah?

From the text of the answer

English translation (unreviewed): The criterion of bid'ah, may Allah bless you, is that a person worships Allah with what Allah has not legislated. This is the criterion: not merely doing what Allah has not legislated, but worshipping with it. Bid'ah is connected with worship; what is other than worship has no connection to it. So if a person worships Allah with what He has not legislated, whether a belief, a saying or an action, we say: this is bid'ah. But if it is among non-devotional matters, then innovate what you wish, and nobody calls it bid'ah; and so we now have many innovations in ordinary matters, do we not?

Question

English translation (unreviewed): Last week we presented a question, and I was a messenger for those behind me; we asked about the signboards in the streets that say: Subhan Allah, al-hamdu lillah. One of us said: Is that not a bid'ah?! Did the Companions do it? So what is the criterion of bid'ah, may Allah pardon you?

From the text of the answer

English translation (unreviewed): Bid'ah is that a person worships Allah, Mighty and Majestic, with what Allah has not legislated; this is bid'ah. As for the means of worship, they are not bid'ah; there is a difference between ends and means. If someone said, for example: the loudspeaker in the prayer, the sermon and exhortations did not exist in the time of the Messenger, so it is a bid'ah!

Question

English translation (unreviewed): To begin, this is a letter from the sender K. 'A. B. from the People's Democratic Republic of Yemen, Hadramawt governorate. He says: What is bid'ah? What are its categories? Is dividing it into five categories, as Shaykh al-'Izz ibn 'Abd al-Salam divided it, correct? And what did Ibn 'Abd al-Salam mean by his division of bid'ah? Please inform us, may Allah reward you.

From the text of the answer

English translation (unreviewed): The Shaykh: Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and blessings and peace upon our Prophet Muhammad and upon all his family and companions. Bid'ah in the Arabic language is a form from al-bad', which is the invention of something without a previous model. From it is the saying of the Most High: “Originator of the heavens and the earth” [al-Baqarah: 117], that is, the one who originated them, because He, Glorified and Exalted, created them without a previous model.

Evidence as the shaykh cited it

English translation (unreviewed): The Prophet, peace be upon him, said at the end of the hadith, as reported by al-Nasa'i: “and every misguidance is in the Fire.”

Question

English translation (unreviewed): A question from the Sudan: the sender says: Shaykh al-Nawawi, may Allah have mercy on him, in his commentary divided the subject of bid'ah into five categories: (1) Obligatory bid'ah, for example arranging the arguments of the theologians against the heretics. (2) Recommended, for example compiling books of knowledge. (3) Permissible, for example indulging in varieties of food. (4) and (5) The forbidden and the disliked, and these are clear. And the question: the Messenger ﷺ said: “Every bid'ah is misguidance.” I ask for clarification ...

(excerpt from the question)

From the text of the answer

English translation (unreviewed): What you quoted from al-Nawawi in dividing bid'ah into five categories has been mentioned by a group of scholars, and they said: bid'ah is divided into five categories: obligatory, recommended, permissible, forbidden and disliked.

Question

English translation (unreviewed): The first letter came from the Republic of the Sudan from Muhammad Ahmad 'Abd al-Hakam of the Kamilin area. He says in this letter, which includes a number of questions: Shaykh al-Nawawi, may Allah have mercy on him, in his commentary explained the subject of bid'ah as five categories: first, an obligatory bid'ah, for example arranging the arguments of the theologians against the heretics; second, the recommended, for example compiling books of knowledge; third, the permissible, for example indulging in ...

(excerpt from the question)

From the text of the answer

English translation (unreviewed): In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, and may Allah send blessings and peace upon the Messenger of Allah, his family and companions and whoever follows his guidance. To proceed: What you quoted from al-Nawawi in dividing bid'ah into five categories has been mentioned by a group of scholars, and they said: bid'ah is divided into five categories: obligatory, recommended, permissible, forbidden and disliked.

Evidence as the shaykh cited it

English translation (unreviewed): In summary, the correct view is that everything people introduce into the religion which Allah has not legislated is called bid'ah, and it is a misguided bid'ah that may not be done. It is not permissible to divide innovations into obligatory, sunnah, permissible and so on; this contradicts the rule that the Prophet ﷺ made clear, and there is danger in it, as if the one saying it is rejecting the Prophet ﷺ: the Prophet ﷺ says “Every bid'ah is misguidance”, and this person says: No, rather they are categories. This is a great danger.

English translation (unreviewed): So the scholars must show proper manners towards the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and beware of anything that may harm the standing of one who does what contradicts the Sunnah. Although the scholars, may Allah have mercy on them, who said that did not intend to reject the Messenger ﷺ — may Allah protect them from that, they did not intend it — it may nonetheless be used as an argument against them by those among the enemies of Allah who think ill of them, and some ignorant people may think so.

Question

English translation (unreviewed): May Allah reward you, Shaykh Muhammad. The listener, also from Ethiopia, says: The great scholars' division of bid'ah into five categories, while the noble Messenger, may Allah's blessings and peace be upon him, says: “Every bid'ah is misguidance, and every misguidance is in the Fire.” What is your view on this, your eminence?

From the text of the answer

English translation (unreviewed): The Shaykh: There is no saying for anyone after the saying of the Messenger, may Allah's blessings and peace be upon him. For the Prophet, may Allah's blessings and peace be upon him, is the most knowledgeable of creation about the religion of Allah, the most sincere of creation to Allah's servants, and the most eloquent of creation in what he says. When these three matters are established, it follows that his speech is the truth which nothing of the speech of people can oppose. So we say: all these divisions that the scholars made contradict the text and must be set aside, and what the text indicates is to be adopted. Anyone who says about a bid'ah that it is good: either it is not a bid'ah but he did not define it, or it is not good but he thought it good, or it is truly both a bid'ah and good; and this can never be, because it would require declaring false the report of the Prophet, may Allah's blessings ...

Question

English translation (unreviewed): May Allah bless you. He has a last question: Is there such a thing as a good bid'ah and a bad bid'ah or not?

From the text of the answer

English translation (unreviewed): The Shaykh: It cannot ever be said of bid'ah in the religion of Allah that it is a good bid'ah, given the saying of the Prophet, may Allah's blessings and peace be upon him and his family: “Every bid'ah is misguidance.” This sentence — I mean “every bid'ah is misguidance” — issued from the most eloquent of creation, Muhammad, may Allah's blessings and peace be upon him and his family, and the most sincere of creation and the most knowledgeable of creation about the law of Allah and about what his own speech means. He said this general sentence: “every bid'ah is misguidance.” So how can anyone come after that and say: some bid'ah is a bad bid'ah and some is a good bid'ah.

Question

English translation (unreviewed): One of the listeners asks your eminence: What is a bid'ah of belief, and what is a bid'ah of action?

From the text of the answer

English translation (unreviewed): Whatever contradicts the Shari'ah is bid'ah. If it is in belief it is called bid'ah, such as supplicating the dead, seeking help from the dead, seeking help from the jinn or the angels, thinking it is religion, believing it is religion and counting it permissible. This is a bid'ah of shirk, major kufr, and it is called bid'ah because its doer thinks it is religion. Likewise building over graves and taking mosques over them is bid'ah, but it is short of kufr; it is a means to kufr. If he builds a mosque over a grave thinking it is religion, or builds a dome over a grave thinking this is permitted, this is a reprehensible bid'ah and one of the means of shirk, because of the Prophet's ﷺ saying: “May Allah curse the Jews and the Christians; they took the graves of their prophets as places of worship.”

Evidence as the shaykh cited it

English translation (unreviewed): Bid'ah is the thing newly introduced into the religion, which people introduce to draw near to Allah, which Allah and His Messenger have not legislated. What neither Allah nor His Messenger legislated is called bid'ah, such as celebrating the birthday of the Prophet ﷺ, or celebrating the birthday of al-Siddiq, 'Umar, 'Uthman, 'Ali, al-Husayn or others, or celebrating the birthday of Abu Hanifah, al-Shafi'i, Malik, Shaykh 'Abd al-Qadir al-Jilani, Sitt Nafisah, Sitt Zaynab or the like; all are reprehensible innovations that are not permitted and are among the means of shirk; we seek refuge in Allah.

English translation (unreviewed): Some people at the mawlid commit shirk with Allah: at the mawlid of the Prophet ﷺ they supplicate to the Prophet ﷺ and seek his help. This is major shirk. And some at the mawlid of 'Ali seek help from 'Ali, make vows to him and supplicate to him besides Allah. This is major shirk.

English translation (unreviewed): And the Prophet ﷺ judged those who call upon graves and the dead and seek their help as disbelievers, and fought them. He fought the people of al-Ta'if who called upon al-Lat and worshipped al-Lat, which was a grave or a rock they worshipped, because they used to knead barley meal over it; and he fought the worshippers of the tree, the worshippers of al-'Uzza, the worshippers of the stone and the worshippers of Manat, until they abandoned that, until they testified that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, and until they abandoned shirk and disavowed it.

English translation (unreviewed): There are many innovations, such as the bid'ah of the mawlid, celebrating the birthday of the Prophet ﷺ or of others, and such as the bid'ah of the night of al-Isra' and al-Mi'raj, celebrating the twenty-seventh of Rajab. This is also a bid'ah of action, and it is reprehensible and not permitted, but it is not major shirk unless it contains shirk: if at the mawlid or at the celebration of the night of al-Isra' and al-Mi'raj there is supplication to the Prophet, peace be upon him, and seeking his help, it becomes major shirk.

English translation (unreviewed): Worldly matters contain no bid'ah, even if they are called innovations. People's invention of cars, aeroplanes, computers or the like, or the telephone or the telegram: all of that is not called bid'ah, and even if called bid'ah in the linguistic sense, it does not enter into the bid'ahs of religion; for bid'ah in the language is the thing that had no previous model; what is invented is called bid'ah in the language, like “originator of the heavens”, meaning their inventor. So this in language is applied to what had no previous example; and if in worldly matters something is called bid'ah, it is not blameworthy, even if called bid'ah linguistically, but it is not objected to because it is not in the religion, not in acts of worship. So if, for example, the invention of the car or the computer is called ...

Question

English translation (unreviewed): May Allah do good to you and bless you. From Irbid, Jordan, this questioner says: Your eminence, may Allah preserve you, I ask you, Shaykh, to give us examples from real life of innovations which we might not expect to be bid'ah, with clarification of what bid'ah is and what harms it brings to the Muslim nation.

From the text of the answer

English translation (unreviewed): The Shaykh: In fact this is a question that cannot be answered in detail, because a person does not encompass everything, but I will give the questioner a rule: whoever worships Allah with something, whether a belief of the heart, an utterance of the tongue or an action of the limbs, we say to him: you are an innovator until you bring us evidence that this is legislated.

Differences in views and wording (not merged)

  • In 1003 and 8155 Ibn Baz reports the division of bid'ah into five categories from 'a group of scholars', and the view of others that it is 'all misguidance'; and in 8739 and 10778 Ibn al-'Uthaymin says that the divisions contradict the text. The texts of each are shown as they came.
  • The statements on 'building over graves as bid'ah' (Ibn Baz) were not compared with Ibn al-'Uthaymin's statements on the criterion of bid'ah (worshipping with what Allah has not legislated); referred to a shaykh.

What is not attributed to anyone

  • Not yet searched: the Permanent Committee (its official site requires a browser and automated verification), al-Fawzan (its site's certificate has expired), al-Albani, 'Abd al-Razzaq al-Badr and others; so no statement is attributed to them in this draft.

Questions that need a shaykh

  • What is the relation between Ibn Baz's statement in 1003 (reporting the views on dividing bid'ah) and his firm statement elsewhere? And how are Ibn Baz's texts on dividing bid'ah to be read? — Needs explanation
  • What is the criterion for distinguishing bid'ah in religion from ijtihad in means? (Ibn al-'Uthaymin 2618) — Needs clarification
