Major, minor and hidden shirk: definition, difference and what the scholars reported

Question

What is major shirk? What are minor and hidden shirk? What is the criterion for distinguishing them? And what is the difference between shirk and kufr?

Introduction

This draft gathers what Shaykhs Ibn Baz and Ibn al-'Uthaymin said, from the full official texts of their pages, on major, minor and hidden shirk and the criterion for distinguishing them.

The statements are shown in their own words and attributed to their authors, without merging them into one view. General rulings reported here are not to be applied to a particular person from this page.

Question

English translation (unreviewed): Our brother asks your eminence and says: We hope that your eminence would kindly clarify the types of shirk? And is swearing by other than Allah a shirk that takes its doer out of the religion or not?

From the text of the answer

English translation (unreviewed): Shirk is of two kinds: major and minor. Major shirk is directing worship, or some of it, to other than Allah, such as supplicating the dead, seeking help from the dead, and vowing to them, or to the jinn or the angels or other dead and absent beings. This is called major shirk, as Quraysh and other Arabs used to do at their idols and statues.

Question

English translation (unreviewed): Whoever defined major shirk as: making other than Allah equal to Allah in what belongs to Allah's exclusive attributes?

From the text of the answer

English translation (unreviewed): The meaning is sound: equating him with something that belongs to Allah's exclusive attributes, such as supplication, fear, hope, reliance, and the like. But the equating may cause them difficulty; so if it is said 'directing some worship to other than Allah', this is more comprehensive: directing some worship to other than Allah even if he did not equate him with Allah, and even if he said that Allah is better, as long as he associated others with Allah; as some of the disbelievers said when the Prophet ﷺ asked him: how many do you worship?

Question

English translation (unreviewed): This questioner, As'ad al-Misri, resident in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, says: Your eminence, I ask about major shirk and what is minor shirk? I hope for an answer to my question, may you be rewarded.

From the text of the answer

English translation (unreviewed): The Shaykh: Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and I send blessings and peace upon our Prophet Muhammad and upon his family and companions and whoever follows them in goodness until the Day of Judgement. Major shirk is the shirk that takes one out of the religion, such as a person believing that there is another god with Allah who runs the universe, or that there is another god with Allah who created something of the universe, or that there is someone with Allah who helps and supports Him. All of this is major shirk, and this shirk relates to lordship (rububiyyah); or that another god be worshipped with Allah, such as praying to the owner of a grave, or drawing near to him by slaughter out of veneration for him, or the like; and this is shirk in divinity (uluhiyyah). So the criterion of major shirk is what takes a person out of the religion.

Evidence as the shaykh cited it

English translation (unreviewed): Except that if he believes that this thing sworn by has the same veneration as Allah, Mighty and Majestic, has, then he is a major polytheist, because he equated the created with the Creator, and so is a major polytheist by that. And let it be known that Allah, Mighty and Majestic, does not forgive shirk, whether minor or major, because of the general saying of Allah, Blessed and Exalted: “Indeed, Allah does not forgive association with Him, but He forgives what is less than that for whom He wills. And he who associates others with Allah has certainly fabricated a great sin” [al-Nisa': 48].

English translation (unreviewed): This is in one verse, and in another verse: “And he who associates others with Allah has certainly gone far astray” [al-Nisa': 116].

Question

English translation (unreviewed): This questioner who abbreviated his name (S. 'A. D.) says: Your eminence, what are the kinds of shirk that take one out of the religion? And is everyone who does them a polytheist, or only the one against whom the Shari'ah evidence has been established? I hope for an answer, may you be rewarded.

From the text of the answer

English translation (unreviewed): The Shaykh: The shirk that takes one out of the religion is that a person takes a god alongside Allah whom he worships and draws near to, such as with bowing, prostration, slaughter, fasting and the like; or takes a lord alongside Allah from whom he seeks help, support and succour. The first is shirk in divinity and the second is shirk in lordship. Whoever does something of that is a polytheist; this is the default. But an impediment may be present in the person that prevents judging him as a polytheist, such as that the person is ignorant and does not know, saw people doing something and did it, and when we alert him he leaves what he was on and is guided; this one is not a polytheist abiding eternally in the Fire, because he is ignorant; except that he may not be excused for this ignorance, such as if he was negligent in seeking knowledge, so it is said to him for example ...

Question

English translation (unreviewed): What is the criterion for differentiating between the texts on major and minor shirk?

From the text of the answer

English translation (unreviewed): Many people ask this question: what is the difference between minor shirk and major shirk? Major shirk is that which, when it occurs from a person, takes him out of the religion. And the minor is that which is less than that. Directing worship to other than Allah is major shirk, and venerating the created like the veneration of Allah, by giving him a right in lordship, or venerating him as the Creator is venerated; this is major shirk.

Question

English translation (unreviewed): What is the criterion of major shirk and what is the criterion of minor shirk? And are sins counted as shirk, knowing that love of desire and love of sin prevail over his love of Allah?

From the text of the answer

English translation (unreviewed): The criterion of major shirk is that it takes one out of the religion. This returns to: if you find a hadith that this is shirk, look at the rules of the Shari'ah in the other texts; if its like takes one out of the religion, it is major shirk, and if it does not take one out, it is minor shirk. So when texts come that this is shirk, we must return this text to the general rules of the Shari'ah: if texts mention shirk but according to the general rules of the Shari'ah it does not take one out of Islam, it is minor shirk, like his saying, may Allah's blessings and peace be upon him and his family: “Whoever swears by other than Allah has disbelieved or committed shirk.”

Evidence as the shaykh cited it

English translation (unreviewed): As for making all sins shirk, yes, in the general sense, because sins only issue from desire, and Allah, the Most High, has called one who follows his desire as having taken it as his god, saying: “Have you seen he who has taken as his god his own desire, and Allah has sent him astray in knowledge and set a seal upon his hearing and his heart and put over his vision a veil? So who will guide him after Allah?” [al-Jathiyah: 23].

Question

English translation (unreviewed): Shaykh al-Islam says: Whoever directs something of worship to other than Allah is a disbeliever, so for example seeking Shari'ah knowledge for other than the sake of Allah. The question: What is the criterion for knowing whether this matter is major or minor shirk? Is it by induction?

From the text of the answer

English translation (unreviewed): First: do you know the acts of worship? You will say: yes, I know the acts of worship, among them prayer, vows, slaughter and the like. If you do this to draw near and curry favour with a human, this is major shirk; and if you do it for Allah but so that the human sees you and praises you, this is showing off and is minor shirk. Seeking knowledge for other than Allah: if the knowledge is of the kind not sought for Allah's sake, like worldly knowledge such as arithmetic, geometry, mathematics and the like, there is no harm for a person to intend this world with it, since he does not draw near to Allah with it; but if it is the knowledge of tawhid, fiqh, tafsir, hadith and the like.

Question

English translation (unreviewed): What is the ruling on one who calls major shirk minor, if it is not accompanied by belief and intention, like supplicating other than Allah?

From the text of the answer

English translation (unreviewed): Major shirk is not called minor, and the minor is not called major; each has its limit. Major shirk has its own status and minor has its own. Supplicating the dead, seeking help from the dead, vowing to the dead or to the stars or idols and sacrificing to them, this is major shirk and is not called minor; this is the shirk of the polytheists, Abu Jahl and his companions. This is major shirk, we seek refuge in Allah. So one who supplicates al-Badawi or 'Ali ibn Abi Talib, or al-Husayn ibn 'Ali or al-Hasan ibn 'Ali or Fatimah, or supplicates al-'Aydarus or Shaykh 'Abd al-Qadir al-Jilani or others, or circumambulates their graves hoping for their intercession or the like, this act is major shirk; this is the worship of idols, we seek refuge in Allah, and this is the worship of Abu Jahl and his like among the people of Makkah ...

Minor and hidden shirk (showing off, swearing by other than Allah, and the like)

Shaykh ‘Abd al-‘Aziz ibn Baz

Question

English translation (unreviewed): What is hidden shirk, or minor shirk?

From the text of the answer

English translation (unreviewed): What occurs in hearts of showing off is called hidden: a person praying to show off, or reciting to show off to people, or glorifying and saying tahlil so that they praise him, or giving charity so that they praise him, with the intention of showing off to them; this is called hidden shirk and is called minor shirk, hidden shirk. Likewise: 'Were it not for Allah and so-and-so', 'This is from Allah and so-and-so' — it is called hidden shirk and called minor shirk.

Question

English translation (unreviewed): Among the definitions of minor shirk they said: that you make what is not a cause a cause. What do you think? And is this absolute?

From the text of the answer

English translation (unreviewed): No, it is not like that. This is from minor shirk, but it is not itself the (definition of) minor shirk. Minor shirk is whatever the Shari'ah has called shirk and which does not take one out of the religion; this is like “Whoever swears by other than Allah has committed shirk” and (when he was asked about minor shirk, he said: “It is showing off”). The criterion in sum is: minor shirk is everything that has come in the Book and the Sunnah as shirk and does not take one out of the religion; and part of it is that you make what is not a cause a cause, such as the necklace and putting things on against the evil eye.

Question

English translation (unreviewed): What is the difference between shirk and kufr?

From the text of the answer

English translation (unreviewed): They may be distinguished in meaning, but the ruling is one: the disbeliever and the polytheist have all left Islam, all of them are in the Fire; but whoever supplicates other than Allah and associates others in the worship of Allah is attached to the name of shirk, and if his kufr is by arrogance against the religion of Allah, or by denying what Allah has obligated, or by declaring lawful what Allah has forbidden, he is attached to the name of kufr; and each one is called a polytheist; what unites them is the presence of one of the nullifiers of Islam; when one of the nullifiers of Islam is present, he is called a disbeliever and called a polytheist.

Question

English translation (unreviewed): The questioner says: What is the difference between shirk and kufr?

From the text of the answer

English translation (unreviewed): Every shirk is called kufr. Every shirk — supplicating other than Allah, seeking help from other than Allah, directing worship to other than Allah — is called shirk and is called kufr; and kufr may also be called shirk, such as one who denies the obligation of prayer or says zina is lawful, is called a disbeliever and called a polytheist. But what is predominant for denial of an obligation or denial of a prohibition is that it is called kufr, and what is predominant for supplication to other than Allah, seeking help from other than Allah, or vowing to other than Allah is that it is called shirk; otherwise every shirk is called kufr, and every major kufr is called shirk. Yes.

Question

English translation (unreviewed): He also says: Is the one with minor shirk, which is showing off, eternally in the Fire or not?

From the text of the answer

English translation (unreviewed): No, the one with minor shirk is not eternal in the Fire, like the major sins whose doer is not eternal in the Fire, like saying: 'Were it not for Allah and you', 'What Allah and you willed', a little showing off, and swearing by other than Allah. All of these are within minor shirk; they do not necessitate eternity in the Fire, and do not invalidate deeds, but they are forbidden. They are not from the major sins but are more severe than the major sins, yet they do not necessitate his eternity in the Fire and do not necessitate despair of forgiveness.

Question

English translation (unreviewed): Whoever dies persisting in minor shirk, is he under the (divine) will?

From the text of the answer

English translation (unreviewed): The apparent view is that he is not forgiven except by one of two means: either by the preponderance of good deeds, or by punishment in proportion to his shirk, like the major sins: if he did not repent of them he is under the will of Allah; but this one is not included under the will, because it carries the name of shirk, so it is serious; either he is punished or he is forgiven if his good deeds outweigh.
Question

English translation (unreviewed): Regarding minor shirk, does it come under the will of Allah, Glorified and Exalted?

From the text of the answer

English translation (unreviewed): There is a disagreement among the scholars on it. Some of them said: it comes under the will — if Allah wills, He forgives him. And some of them said: he must be punished but not eternally in the Fire. In any case: even if we say it is under the will, is a person guaranteed that Allah will will to forgive him? He is not guaranteed. Even sins other than shirk, which are without doubt under the will, a person may not be careless about on the basis that they are under the will, because the default is the occurrence of punishment.

Question

English translation (unreviewed): Does minor shirk take its doer out of the religion?

From the text of the answer

English translation (unreviewed): Minor shirk does not take one out of the religion; rather it diminishes faith and contradicts the perfection of the obligatory tawhid. So if a person recites to show off, or gives charity to show off, or the like, his faith diminishes and weakens and he is sinful for this act, but he does not commit major kufr [1].

English translation (unreviewed): He is excused in everything, but on the condition that he did not neglect seeking the truth. The second condition: that he does not know himself to be a polytheist, that is, he does not attribute himself to Islam. For this reason the polytheists now are without doubt polytheists, but those to whom nothing of Islam reached, or who were Muslims but are polytheists without knowing — these are excused.

Question

English translation (unreviewed): What is the ruling on one who commits major shirk while ignorant of it?

From the text of the answer

English translation (unreviewed): His ruling is that nothing is upon him, but if he is called to the truth, he must follow it. It is not conceivable that he be ignorant of major shirk, except if he grew up newly arrived to Islam or was in a desert far from scholars; this is the one whose ignorance is conceivable. As for a man among people, apparently his ignorance of that is unlikely, and in that case he is negligent in not asking, so he is sinful.

Question

English translation (unreviewed): One who falls into major shirk, such as one who seeks help from other than Allah or makes a vow to other than Allah, is it said that he is a disbeliever, or is it said that the proof must be established against him?

From the text of the answer

English translation (unreviewed): Every person who falls into shirk when someone like him is ignorant of it, is not judged to have committed shirk until the proof is established against him, just as one who falls into a sin short of shirk is not punished for it if someone like him is ignorant of it. If a man committed zina and was new to Islam and did not know that zina is forbidden, we would not apply the hadd penalty on him because he is ignorant. Likewise one who seeks help from other than Allah or supplicates other than Allah while ignorant, and we know that someone like him is ignorant of it, is not judged a disbeliever, because the explicit verses are many that kufr is not judged except after knowledge. Allah, Mighty and Majestic, says: “And your Lord would not have destroyed the towns until He had sent to their mother-town a messenger reciting to them Our verses, and We would not have ...

Evidence as the shaykh cited it

English translation (unreviewed): And the Most High says: “Messengers as bringers of good tidings and warners, so that mankind will have no argument against Allah after the messengers” [al-Nisa': 165]. So He made clear that people have no argument against Allah except if He sends the messenger and informs them that this is forbidden and this is shirk.

English translation (unreviewed): And the Most High said: “And We would not punish until We sent a messenger” [al-Isra': 15].

English translation (unreviewed): And the Most High said: “And whoever opposes the Messenger after guidance has become clear to him and follows other than the way of the believers, We will give him what he has chosen and burn him in Hell, and evil is the destination” [al-Nisa': 115].

Differences in views and wording (not merged)

  • The fate of one who dies upon minor shirk: Ibn Baz has two statements (5390: 'its owner is not eternal in the Fire', and 21683: 'the apparent view is that he is not forgiven except by one of two means'), and Ibn al-'Uthaymin mentioned that there is 'a disagreement among the scholars' on the issue (5503). They are not reconciled here.
  • The excuse of the ignorant in major shirk: Ibn al-'Uthaymin has statements in 5654, 2172, 10348 and 2881, some about excusing under conditions and some about the rarity of ignorance; referred to a shaykh to clarify the relation between them.
  • Definition of minor shirk: Ibn al-'Uthaymin said in 6049 that 'making what is not a cause a cause' is 'part of minor shirk but is not itself minor shirk'; it was not compared with Ibn Baz's definitions.

What is not attributed to anyone

  • Not yet searched: the Permanent Committee (its official site requires a browser and automated verification), al-Fawzan (its site's certificate has expired), al-Albani, 'Abd al-Razzaq al-Badr and others; so no statement is attributed to them in this draft.

Questions that need a shaykh

  • What is the relation between Ibn Baz's statement 'its owner is not eternal in the Fire' (5390) and 'the apparent view is that he is not forgiven except by one of two means' (21683) on minor shirk? — Two statements by the same shaykh
  • How are Ibn al-'Uthaymin's statements on the excuse of the ignorant in major shirk to be understood (5654, 2172, 10348)? — Needs clarification
  • What is the criterion of 'hidden shirk' and its relation to minor shirk according to the two shaykhs? (11005 and 8219) — Two statements that need comparison
