Covering the 'awrah in prayer: the limit of a man's and woman's 'awrah, thin garments, uncovered shoulders and head
Question
What is the limit of a man's and a woman's 'awrah in prayer? And what is the ruling on a thin garment, uncovering the shoulders or head, and the appearance of the feet or hair?
Introduction
This page gathers the texts of Shaykhs Ibn Baz and Ibn al-'Uthaymin from their official pages on covering the 'awrah in prayer, arranged by issue.
Each statement is attributed to its author, and the evidence in it is as the shaykh himself cited it. The site does not prefer between their views.

English translation (unreviewed): What are the limits of a man's 'awrah outside the prayer? Are the thighs part of it? And what is the ruling on looking at them?
- From the text of the answer
English translation (unreviewed): The 'awrah is what is between the navel and the knee. This is the most correct of the scholars' views, and the two thighs are part of the 'awrah; this is the most correct. A man's 'awrah is between the navel and the knee; this is the correct one of the two views of the scholars. Some said: the thigh is not 'awrah, but it is recommended to cover it and covering it is emphasised, but it is not 'awrah — but this is a weaker view, and the correct one is that it is part of the 'awrah; indeed several hadiths came on this, in which the Prophet ﷺ said: “The thigh is ‘awrah.” And because it leads to temptation: whenever it appears it leads to temptation, especially from people of beauty and good appearance, for it tempts whoever looks at it.

English translation (unreviewed): The first letter of this episode is a letter from one of the listener sisters who sent it including a number of questions, thirteen questions, a large part of whose questions we presented in past episodes; and in this episode she asks the following: First: I heard that a man's 'awrah is only in prayer; is this correct? Advise us, may Allah reward you, because we watch free wrestling, and wrestling as you know, they wear ...
(excerpt from the question)
- From the text of the answer
English translation (unreviewed): In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, and may Allah send blessings and peace upon the Messenger of Allah, his family and companions and whoever follows his guidance. To proceed: A man's 'awrah is what is between the navel and the knee, in the prayer and outside it; but in the prayer it is added that he cover his shoulders or one of them with a cloak or the like if he is able. It is not permissible for the believer in the prayer to show anything of what is between the navel and the knee. This is what the majority of the scholars hold, and it is the correct view.

English translation (unreviewed): Does the knee come under the 'awrah?
- From the text of the answer
English translation (unreviewed): No, the knee and what is below it is not 'awrah. The Prophet ﷺ sat one day by a well and uncovered his knees, and Abu Bakr, 'Umar and 'Uthman sat with him likewise. Q: And what is above the knee? A: What is above the knee is 'awrah, and the knee and what is below it is not 'awrah. Q: Some scholars divide the 'awrah into light and heavy?

English translation (unreviewed): May Allah reward you. This questioner says: Your eminence, what are the limits of a man's 'awrah: is it from the navel to the knee up to the upper edge of the knee, or to the lower edge of the knee? And what is the ruling if one wears a garment that is not transparent but shows only the outline of the underclothes?
- From the text of the answer
English translation (unreviewed): The Shaykh: Yes. A man's 'awrah with respect to prayer is between the navel and the knee. The navel is not 'awrah and the knee is not 'awrah. If a person wears a light garment that does not reveal the skin, but shows the outline of the underclothes, it is covering, because the garment that does not cover is the one through which the colour of the skin can be seen, so that the skin can be distinguished as red or yellow or black or the like.

English translation (unreviewed): One of the listener sisters, Umm al-Hasan, sent a letter including a group of questions, and in this episode she asks and says: He, peace be upon him, says: (“A woman is all 'awrah except her hands and face in prayer”) or as it came from him ﷺ. Does this mean that a woman must cover even her feet if her dress is covering and only her feet show? Must she cover them too by wearing socks or not?
(excerpt from the question)
- From the text of the answer
English translation (unreviewed): These words are not a hadith from the Prophet ﷺ, but are from the words of some jurists. They say: the woman is 'awrah except her face in prayer, and others said: except her face and hands, and this is a well-known view among the scholars. And others said: except her face, hands and feet as well. And most of the scholars hold that her feet are 'awrah in prayer and that covering the feet is obligatory; this is the view of most of the scholars.
- Evidence as the shaykh cited it
English translation (unreviewed): Among them: the one who narrated it from 'A'ishah did not hear from 'A'ishah — he is Khalid ibn Duraik — for he did not meet 'A'ishah nor reach her time, so it is broken (munqati'), and the broken chain according to the scholars is weak and cannot be used as proof.
English translation (unreviewed): And assuming its authenticity, it is possible that this was before the verse of hijab was revealed, for women in the time of the Prophet ﷺ used to be unveiled and sit with the men until Allah revealed the verse of hijab. So if we assumed the hadith to be authentic, it could be that it was before the verse of hijab was revealed, because the hadith does not mention the verse of hijab.
English translation (unreviewed): But it is enough for us that it is weak, weak in its chain, not authentic from the Prophet ﷺ, so it may not be relied upon; and what is prescribed for women — rather obligatory for women — is hijab and covering from men in all circumstances, including the face, for it is a woman's adornment, indeed her greatest adornment.

English translation (unreviewed): What is the limit of the 'awrah of the free woman and the limit of the 'awrah of the slave woman, with evidence? And must a woman cover her feet in the prayer? And if her face and hands are uncovered in the prayer, is anything required of her?
- From the text of the answer
English translation (unreviewed): The woman is all 'awrah except her face in prayer; all of her is 'awrah as in the hadith: “When she goes out, Satan looks at her”, and the Prophet said: “She is ‘awrah.” So she is all 'awrah except her face in the prayer, and some scholars held [that includes] her hands as well in the prayer; and other than that she is all 'awrah before the foreign man, her hand, her face, her foot; she is 'awrah with respect to the foreign man, and she is all 'awrah in the prayer except her face, and her hands in the prayer specifically; and her foot is 'awrah in the prayer. She covers her feet in the prayer with socks, or by lengthening her garments: if the garment is full and covers her feet, it suffices in the prayer.

English translation (unreviewed): May Allah bless you. This is a letter that reached us from the listener who abbreviated her name as A. M. 'A. M. She says in her first question about the hadith, roughly, from the noble Messenger, may Allah's blessings and peace be upon him, that a woman is all 'awrah except the face and hands in prayer: may the foot appear in the prayer?
- From the text of the answer
English translation (unreviewed): The Shaykh: I do not know a hadith from the Prophet, may Allah's blessings and peace be upon him, with this meaning that this questioner mentioned; rather this is the expression of some jurists, that the woman in prayer is all 'awrah, and some say: except her face, hands and feet. The scholars, may Allah have mercy on them, differ about her hands and feet: are they 'awrah in prayer or not?
- Evidence as the shaykh cited it
English translation (unreviewed): The precaution is that the woman cover her whole body except the face, unless there are foreign men around her; if there are foreign men around her, she must cover her face as well from these men; and when she prostrates on the ground she removes the cover from the face so that her forehead touches the ground, because in this case nobody sees her, and when she stands with foreign men around she covers her face. This is better and more precautionary in my view. The Prophet, peace be upon him, said: “Whoever avoids doubtful matters has safeguarded his religion and his honour.”

English translation (unreviewed): The letter we have in hand reached us from Iraq from sister M. 'A. H. She says in it: Is it permissible to pray with the palms of the legs — she means the feet — uncovered, since I pray with my palms uncovered because I do not know whether it is permissible or not? She says: 'kaffay al-rijlayn' [palms of the two legs]. Legs have no palms.
- From the text of the answer
English translation (unreviewed): The Shaykh: Perhaps she means the legs. — The question: No, she means the palm, because she added it and did not use a conjunction. — The Shaykh: The question. — The question: She says: Is it permissible to pray with the palms of the two legs uncovered, since I pray with the palms uncovered because I do not know whether it is permissible or not? — The answer: The Shaykh: We say: this matter has a disagreement among the scholars, which is: are the feet and the palms among what a woman must cover in her prayer or not?

English translation (unreviewed): May Allah do good to you for this explanation, your eminence. The questioner from Libya, S. M., says in this last question: What is the ruling on hair showing from behind the covering, the headcover, in prayer, though we know that going out of the house with it is forbidden, but what is its ruling in prayer? May you be rewarded. — The Shaykh: Hair? — The question: Yes.
- From the text of the answer
English translation (unreviewed): The Shaykh: The scholars, may Allah have mercy on them, mentioned that a woman in prayer is 'awrah except her face, and that the adult free woman must cover her whole body except her face. On the basis of this view, if anything of her hair, that is of her head hair, comes out, she must cover it immediately, because the hair, the head hair, is part of the head, and the head must be covered, so the hair must also be covered, because it follows it.

English translation (unreviewed): We know that covering the 'awrah in prayer is obligatory, but we find many people wearing light clothes that show their 'awrahs, and thereby the prayer becomes invalid. We ask your eminence to clarify that for the people, may Allah reward you.
- From the text of the answer
English translation (unreviewed): The believer, if he sees something from any of them, must advise him; if he sees laxity from him and light clothing that shows his 'awrah, he advises him and objects to this act, because this may not be approved among the believers. So when a person sees this from his brother, or his wife, or his daughter, or his sister, or sees it from his friend, or from someone praying in the mosque or anywhere, he objects to it.

English translation (unreviewed): The brother M. Z. A. from Ras al-Khaimah says in his question: We notice that some worshippers wear light clothes through which a person can see the skin, and they also do not wear long trousers under them. What is the ruling on praying in such clothes? Give us a fatwa, may Allah reward you on our behalf and on behalf of Islam and the Muslims.
- From the text of the answer
English translation (unreviewed): The worshipper must cover his 'awrah in the prayer by the consensus of the Muslims, and he may not pray naked, whether a man or a woman. The woman's 'awrah is greater and more. A man's 'awrah is between the navel and the knee, with covering the shoulders or one of them if he is able, because of the saying of the Prophet ﷺ to Jabir: “If the garment is wide, wrap yourself in it, and if it is narrow, wear it as a waist-wrapper”, agreed upon; and his saying ﷺ in the hadith of Abu Hurayrah: “None of you should pray in a single garment with nothing of it on his shoulder”, agreed upon as authentic.
- Evidence as the shaykh cited it
English translation (unreviewed): Abu Dawud, may Allah have mercy on him, reported from Umm Salamah, may Allah be pleased with her, that she asked the Prophet ﷺ: May a woman pray in a dir' and a khimar without an izar?
English translation (unreviewed): He ﷺ said: “If the dir' is full-length, covering the tops of her feet.” Al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar, may Allah have mercy on him, said in Bulugh al-Maram: (“The imams held its authenticity as a statement of Umm Salamah”).
English translation (unreviewed): Likewise the woman, if she wears thin clothes that do not cover the 'awrah, her prayer is invalid. The prayer is the pillar of Islam and its greatest pillar after the two testimonies. So it is a duty on all Muslims, men and women, to care for it, complete its conditions and beware of the causes of its invalidity, because of the saying of Allah: “Maintain with care the prayers and the middle prayer” [al-Baqarah: 238], and His saying, Glorified: “And establish prayer and give zakat” [al-Baqarah: 43].

English translation (unreviewed): What is the ruling on praying in a transparent garment?
- From the text of the answer
English translation (unreviewed): Praying in a transparent garment: if there are trousers underneath that cover what is between the navel and the knee, there is no harm; and if there is nothing underneath, it is not permissible to wear it in the prayer or outside the prayer, because covering the 'awrah is necessary. Allah, the Most High, said: “O children of Adam, take your adornment at every mosque” [al-A'raf: 31]. And the transparent garment, even if a person wears it, he has not taken adornment; what is the benefit if, being transparent, its presence is as its absence.

English translation (unreviewed): Some people pray the obligatory prayer with nothing on their shoulders covering them, especially in the days of Hajj while in ihram. What is the ruling on that?
- From the text of the answer
English translation (unreviewed): If he is unable, there is nothing on him, because of the saying of Allah, Glorified: “So fear Allah as much as you are able” [al-Taghabun: 16] and the saying of the Prophet ﷺ to Jabir ibn 'Abdillah, may Allah be pleased with them both: “If the garment is wide, wrap yourself in it, and if it is narrow, wear it as a waist-wrapper”, agreed upon as authentic. But with the ability to cover the shoulders or one of them, he must cover both or one of them in the most correct of the two views of the scholars; if he leaves that, his prayer is not valid, because of the saying of the Prophet ﷺ: “None of you should pray in a single garment with nothing of it on his shoulder”, agreed upon as authentic.

English translation (unreviewed): Who said that covering one of the shoulders in prayer is sunnah and not obligatory?
- From the text of the answer
English translation (unreviewed): It is not obligatory, because of the saying of the Prophet ﷺ: “[with nothing] on his shoulder”, and in some narrations “his two shoulders”; so if he covers one of the shoulders, what is required is achieved, but covering both is better and more precautionary.

English translation (unreviewed): An imam leads people in prayer without anything on his head; what is the ruling on this?
- From the text of the answer
English translation (unreviewed): There is no harm in that, because the head is not 'awrah; what is required is that he prays in the waist-wrapper and the cloak, because of the saying of the Prophet ﷺ: “None of you should pray in a single garment with nothing of it on his shoulder.” But if he takes his adornment and completes his clothing, that is better, because of the saying of Allah, Mighty and Majestic: “O children of Adam, take your adornment at every mosque” [al-A'raf: 31]. But if he is in a country where it is not their custom to cover the head, there is no blame on him for uncovering it [1].

- From the text of the answer
English translation (unreviewed): The Shaykh: A man's prayer with his head bare, that is uncovered, is not objectionable, because covering the head is not obligatory. But if a person is in a country where it is their custom to cover their heads and they see that as part of complete adornment, it is better for the person to cover his head with the clothing that people are used to, because of the general saying of the Most High: “O children of Adam, take your adornment at every mosque”. We here in our country in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia are accustomed to covering the head with the cap and the ghutrah, so covering our heads with that is better than uncovering them, because this is part of the complete adornment that Allah, the Most High, commanded us to take in His saying: “O children of Adam, take your adornment at every mosque”.
Differences in views and wording (not merged)
- The limit of a man's 'awrah: in 2264 Ibn Baz holds that the thighs are part of the 'awrah, and reports the view of those who did not count them, describing it as 'weaker'; and in 21921 he mentioned that the knee and what is below it is not 'awrah.
- The limit of a woman's 'awrah in prayer: Ibn Baz in 6513 and 1746 and Ibn al-'Uthaymin in 8839 and 7346 mention that there is a disagreement among the scholars about the face, palms and feet; each shaykh has his wording in the original answer.
- Covering the shoulders: Ibn Baz's wording in 4006 differs from his wording in 22454; the comparison is for the two original answers.

Questions that need a shaykh
- How are Ibn Baz's two statements on covering the shoulders (4006 and 22454) reconciled? — Needs clarification from the people of knowledge
- What is the ruling on one who prayed in a thin garment out of ignorance or forgetfulness? — Not covered by a question in the materials read
