Fiqh of the prayer

Obligations of the prayer

Distinguishing the obligation from the pillar and the sunnah helps the learner understand the prayer without confusion.

01

The definition

What is the obligation?

The worshipper is commanded the obligation and is sinful if he deliberately leaves it; if he leaves it forgetfully, he makes it up with the prostration of forgetfulness according to the scholars' detail.

02

Examples

The most prominent obligations

  • All the takbirs other than the opening takbir.
  • Saying: 'Sami'a Allahu liman hamidah' for the imam and the one praying alone.
  • Saying: 'Rabbana wa laka al-hamd'.
  • The glorification in bowing and prostration.
  • Saying: 'Rabbi ighfir li' between the two prostrations.
  • The first tashahhud and sitting for it.
03

The difference

Three degrees

The pillarIt does not drop, and the prostration alone does not make it up.
The obligationThe prostration of forgetfulness makes it up when left through forgetfulness.
The sunnahIt completes the prayer, and the prayer is not invalidated by leaving it.
