The fourth pillar of Islam

Fasting: what does the Muslim need to know?

A comprehensive page that begins with the purpose and meaning, then leads to the basic rulings and concessions.

01

The meaning of fasting

An act of worship to Allah, not mere abstention

Fasting is an act of worship by which the Muslim draws near to Allah, by abstaining from the things that break the fast from the rising of dawn to sunset with the intention, while guarding his tongue and limbs from sins.

02

Upon whom it is obligatory

Responsibility and ability

Fasting Ramadan is obligatory on the Muslim who is accountable and able, and there are concessions and rulings for the sick, the traveller and others. A ruling is not dropped or made harsher by mere assumption.

03

What invalidates it

Learn the invalidators without obsession

The clear invalidators should be known, distinguishing between what occurred deliberately and what occurred by forgetfulness or without choice, and between agreed issues and issues that need detail.
