The path of knowing Allah and His oneness ← Lesson 3
What is the meaning of worship?
Worship is not only prayer and fasting. It is a broad term gathering what Allah loves and is pleased with of the words of the heart and tongue and the deeds of the limbs, and it is built on sincerity to Allah and conformity with the Sunnah of His Messenger ﷺ.
The answer in two lines
Worship is everything Allah has legislated and loves and is pleased with
Among worship are outward deeds such as prayer, fasting and zakat, and inward deeds such as love of Allah, fear of Him, hope in Him and reliance on Him. Worship is directed only to Allah, and is not performed according to desire; rather as Allah legislated it on the tongue of His Messenger ﷺ.
The meaning begins with revelation
Three verses draw the picture
﴿ وَمَا أُمِرُوا إِلَّا لِيَعْبُدُوا اللَّهَ مُخْلِصِينَ لَهُ الدِّينَ حُنَفَاءَ وَيُقِيمُوا الصَّلَاةَ وَيُؤْتُوا الزَّكَاةَ وَذَلِكَ دِينُ الْقَيِّمَةِ ﴾“And they were not commanded except to worship Allah, [being] sincere to Him in religion, inclining to truth, and to establish prayer and to give zakat. And that is the correct religion.”
﴿ إِيَّاكَ نَعْبُدُ وَإِيَّاكَ نَسْتَعِينُ ﴾“You alone we worship, and You alone we ask for help.”
﴿ قُلْ إِنَّ صَلَاتِي وَنُسُكِي وَمَحْيَايَ وَمَمَاتِي لِلَّهِ رَبِّ الْعَالَمِينَ لَا شَرِيكَ لَهُ ﴾“Say: Indeed, my prayer, my rites of sacrifice, my living and my dying are for Allah, Lord of the worlds. No partner has He.”
An easy map to remember
Worship resides in the heart, is spoken by the tongue, and is done by the limbs
The heart
Sincerity, love, fear, hope and reliance.
The tongue
The two testimonies, remembrance, supplication, reciting the Qur'an and the good word.
The limbs
Prayer, fasting, zakat, Hajj, dutifulness to parents and fulfilling the trust.
A scale that prevents showing off and innovation
The two conditions for the acceptance of worship
Sincerity to Allah
That you intend by your worship the face of Allah and His pleasure, not the praise of people or their regard.
Its evidence: “sincere to Him in religion”Conformity with the Sunnah
That worship be in the manner Allah legislated and the Messenger ﷺ brought, not according to taste and desire.

From understanding to life
Try this today
Choose one act of worship you perform today, then ask yourself two questions before it:
- Am I doing it for Allah alone?
- Do I know how the Prophet ﷺ did it or how the Shari'ah commanded it?
With these two questions worship moves from a familiar habit to a conscious act by which the Muslim hopes for Allah's pleasure.
